Characterization and selection of mandarin and hybrids of the São Paulo State

Abstract

Mandarins and their hybrids are the main group of citrus for the fresh fruit market. In the São Paulo State, Ponkan mandarin is the main variety under production and the greatest for consumer acceptance, mainly due to the easeness of peeling, taste and size of fruits. However, its susceptibility to alternaria brown spot, the main disease of mandarins, and its restricted production period (April-June) justify the need to expand options for cultivated varieties, especially those that are disease resistant and late-season production. There is a wide range of mandarins varieties, which are classified as easy peelers or Ponkan like, and that would meet the demand of the consumer market. Thus, this study aims to characterize phenotypically (fruit characteristics) of 200 accessions of mandarins present in the Citrus Germplasm Bank of IAC and select those that can be classified in the group of Ponkan like. These varieties will be evaluated along with 10 hybrids of mandarin and sweet orange that have fruit characteristics similar to Ponkan mandarin, as maturation period, physical and chemical characteristics and resistance to Alternaria brown spot. It is expected with this work, selection of new accesses with commercial potential that could extend the regular harvest season in the State and foster greater economic benefits to growers. (AU)
