Support for the development of oceanographic research at the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo - IOUSP

Abstract

The research support offered by laboratories, equipment, vessels and research support bases that compose the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo are intensively used by the researchers for the development of their projects. In this way, laboratory equipment, bases and floating media that are in need of updating or replacement must be implemented to meet current demands and to set new targets for restoring platforms for the acquisition of oceanographic and meteorological data in the research bases and addresses the vessels, in addition to adjusting laboratories receiving equipment with better technology and replacing stale and obsolete equipment. This will certainly strengthen research and raise the standard of project data and make it available for further research. Thus, to apply resources in the adaptation and improvement of the conditions for research in the scope of the Departments that flood the researchers and their laboratories and also, in the Institutional structures as in the large vessels like the ships Alpha crucis and Alpha Delphini, besides the smaller vessels and still , in the Base of Research Support in the North Coast (Ubatuba-SP), Southern Base (Cananéia) and Base Litoral Centro (Santos), the latter in phase of implementation, which maintains field equipment used intensively in the researches, is a destination very appropriate for the FAPESP Institutional Technical Reserve, to implement improvements and adequacy of the use of available structures and installation and operation of new equipment and procedures according to the progress necessary for research in the country. The plan for the application of funds from the Institutional Technical Reserve was approved at the 367th Ordinary Meeting of the IOUSP Congregation on April 19, 2017. It is structured to meet the needs of the departments where the researchers are based, i. e. in the Department of Physical Oceanography (DOF) and in the Department of Biological Oceanography (DOB), as well as in the research structures linked directly to the Institution such as the Vessels and the Research Bases on the Coast. This investment will allow the implementation of continuous platforms of data acquisition that can be used by several researchers and the scientific community, as well as giving adequate support to current research, remedying the problem of updating the structures and equipment used by several researchers depreciated with time and hardly demands on individual and thematic projects.
