In situ effect study of a sodium bicarbonate solution on enamel after simulation of endogenous dental erosion

Abstract

An oral rinse with sodium bicarbonate solution after an erosive episode has been recommended. Nevertheless, the potential role of this neutralizing solution on the dental erosion progression has not yet been proved. Therefore, this randomized 2x2 crossover study will investigate the protective effect of a sodium bicarbonate solution in enamel previously exposed to a simulated intrinsic acid. After a lead-in period, 14 volunteers will be randomly assigned to use one of the solutions for oral rinse while wearing a removable appliance, containing 2 bovine enamel slabs on each side. On the first day salivary pellicle will be allowed to form. Three times daily for the following experimental days, an acidic solution will be applied over the specimens of one side of each appliance, ex vivo, for 2 min, while the other slabs will remain unexposed. Afterwards, the excess acid will be removed, and the device will be reinserted in the mouth. Subsequently, volunteers will perform an oral rinse with the allocated solution (sodium bicarbonate or deionized water) for 60 s. At the end of the first treatment phase, the specimens will be removed for analysis, and the subjects will start a washout period prior to their second treatment phase. A new set of bovine enamel specimens will be mounted in the appliance and participants will use the alternative solution. The samples will be assessed for wear depth measured profilometrically. The values of wear depth in relation to the sound surfaces will be considered for the statistical analysis.
