Abstract

The family Asteraceae, that had extensive worldwide distribution, is characterized by its ability to produce variety of secondary metabolites, which are often responsible for the therapeutic or toxic effects of the plants. The species Lychnophora granmongolense (Duarte) Semir & Leitao Filho (Vernonieae, Asteraceae), is known for its trypanocidal effect. This specie has a restricted distribution to the brazilian cerrado. The secondary metabolites are currently targets of studies where hipheneted techniques are applied with the purpose of conducting a dereplication of complex mixtures. These techniques can also be extremely useful in the quality control of phytotherapic medicine, mainly in industrial scale, in an attempt to monitor and ensure the consistency of active ingredients and / or markers characteristic of the plant species. Adding to this, it is also important to highlight the ecological importance of phytochemicals studies in trying to understand the interactions of individuals with their habitat and the differences and similarities between the populations of the same species.
