Bariatric patients and analysis of periodontopathogenic bacteria DNA: a longitudinal study

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of obesity and the risen realization of surgery to reduce weight, it is necessary to evaluate the oral condition of these individuals. The obesity can be related to the oral problems such as periodontal disease, tooth wear and xerostomia. The bariatric surgery can interfere in the conditions of oral health, depending on some systemic factors after surgery, whose definition is not established in scientific literature. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of oral health conditions, presence of periodontopathogenic bacteria and association with obesity and bariatric surgery. This is a prospective longitudinal study, composed of 90 patients that will be submitted to bariatric surgery, Fobi- Capella technical, in the following hospitals: HCRP / FMRP-USP (n = 30), HC / FMB-UNESP (n = 30) and HB / FAMERP (n = 30). The clinical examination will evaluate the occurrence of periodontal disease, dental wear and salivary flow and, will be collected samples of the gingival fluid to analyze the presence of 3 periodontal bacteria (Prevotella intermedia, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythensis and Porphyromonas gingivalis) through reactions of Real-time PCR. Also it will be applied a questionnaire related to oral health care, assessment of weight and height for obtaining the body mass index (BMI) and others health information, through registration in hospital for correlate with the variables. The participants will be reevaluated in 6th and 12th months after bariatric surgery. The results of this study will be able to contribute for identification of periodontal disease that increase after the bariatric surgery, with aim to identify possible etiological factors to minimize, reduce or prevent bone loss of the dental support tissue.
