Abstract

Many pathophysiological conditions are related to the involvement of free radicals in the metabolism of living cells, for example, cellular aging, atherosclerosis, diabetes, various degenerative neurological diseases and cancer. These disorders are associated with a phenomenon called oxidative stress, which may be defined as an imbalance between species pro-oxidants and antioxidants in biological systems. External factors such as exposure to toxic substances, such as textile dyes, may also cause oxidative stress. Several studies have demonstrated the antioxidant effects of natural products in the prevention of damage caused by the oxidative process. Antioxidants have the property to capture free radicals and are, therefore, effective in combating the harmful effects of cellular oxidation process. Particularly, flavonoids, extracted from plants, present themselves as potential antioxidants. Therefore, this project proposes to investigate the interaction of azo dye with DNA immobilized on electrodes in order to obtain a greater understanding of these genotoxic substances, and the effect of antioxidant flavonoids present in plant extracts against the action of the textile dye in case damage to nucleotides.
