Effects of grape juice on oxidative stress biomarkers in HIV-infected patients with lipodystrophy syndrome

Abstract

Introduction: several studies non-infected HIV patients have been using grape juice as a dietary supplement, resulting in benefits such as reduced oxidative stress and decreased LDL oxidation. All this benefits could reduce risk of atherogenic plaque formation and cardiovascular disease. HIV-infected patients under antiretroviral therapy are more susceptible to oxidative stress and syndrome of lipodystrophy (SLHIV), which involves alterations in body composition and metabolism, including dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. These alterations could also increase the risk for cardiovascular disease in this specific group. Objective: the project aims to evaluate oxidative stress biomarkers, triglycerides levels and insulin resistance in patients with SLHIV before and after with grape juice supplementation. Methods: twenty individuals with SLHIV will be advice to ingest 500 ml of grape juice daily for a period of 15 days. Analysis of oxidative stress, lipid profile, insulin resistance and anthropometric measurements will be done before and after the intervention. (AU)
