Abstract

Reforested wood, such as the genera Eucalyptus and Pinus, are replacing native essences in various segments of timber industry, as in the furniture industry, industry panels, industrial structures of wood and construction, just by the rapid growth of these species and increasing industrial demand for forest resources. At the same time, considering the significant volume of waste oat hulls generated in the country, (about 500 000 t of oats were produced in 2009: oat hulls represents 25-30% of the same weight, about 150 000 t per year) makes their use feasible for adding value to a material with potential environmental risk if not reused. In this project, panels will be produced with Eucalyptus sp particles and oat hulls addition, bonded under pressure with two types of resins (polyurethane based on castor oil and urea-formaldehyde). Alternatively, the toxicity of the adhesives, polyurethane resin based on castor oil, developed at the Institute of Chemistry of Sao Carlos, USP, is a national technology. The physical-mechanical performance of the panels produced in the laboratory will be evaluated based on the normative document ABNT:NBR14810-3, 2003. The performance over time is possible with the aid of accelerated aging equipment. It is hoped that the results obtained confirm the viability of using waste oat hulls added to particles of Eucalyptus sp in the production of particle boards.
