Abstract

The Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a complex disorder that occurs in a variety of situations, with clinical manifestations that can range of minimal elevations in serum creatinine to renal failure requiring dialysis. The mortality rate remains high and it is strictly related to metabolic and nutritional factors, since the loss of kidney function affects the metabolism of macronutrients, with the hypercatabolism acting like the most important nutritional alteration. Given this, the assessment and quantification of the degree of catabolic stress of these patients is of paramount importance to enable the most appropriate interventions to minimize the protein-energy wasting. This study aims to evaluate and compare the nitrogen balance of patients undergoing different dialysis therapies and evaluate its correlation with systemic infection and mortality. It is a prospective cohort study in 24 months, with an estimated 150 patients diagnosed with AKI and clinical features suggestive of acute tubular necrosis in dialysis treatment. It will be applied the assessment protocol consisting of clinical, nutritional, biochemical features, and measures related to infection and catabolism. Statistical analysis will be performed by means of analysis of variance for repeated measures, Pearson correlation and logistic regression model. For presentation of data, it will be used descriptive statistics and variability of position and results of tests of hypotheses discussed in the 5% level of significance. (AU)
