Abstract

Introduction: Because of the "Nutritional Transition", traditional food in the diet pattern of Brazil, such as common bean, has suffered a significant reduction in its consumption. Beans are a remarkable food with important functional and nutritional characteristics, among them cholesterol-lowering properties. Cardiovascular diseases are among the highest contributors to the known causes of death, and hypercholesterolemia is one of the main risk factors. One of the major points of cholesterol homeostasis is the expression of hepatic LDL receptors. Objective: In addition to a Masters Science work in progress, the aim of this project for Undergraduate Research is to evaluate the expression of LDL receptors in liver of hypercholesterolemic hamsters fed diets, supplemented or not with beans of the species Phaseolus vulgaris (black and carioca) . Materials and Methods: The effect of consumption of beans in the expression of LDL receptors will be evaluated by measuring its expression by using a commercial kit specific for this purpose [Low Density Lipoprotein Receptor (LDLR) ELISA Kit], using liver tissue of the animals subjected to diets. Analysis of the Results: Average and standard deviation will be used to express the results, and difference among values will be studied by analysis of variance, Tukey and Pearson correlation.
