Prevalence of high blood pressure in adolescents: a systematic review

Abstract

The objectives of this project are: (i) systematically review the literature on the prevalence of high blood pressure (HBP) in adolescents, (ii) to analyze the possible factors associated with PAE (iii) compare the prevalence between developed and developing countries. The research will be performed in eight databases (BioMed Central, CINAHL, Embase, Eric, MEDLINE / PubMed, PsycINFO, SciELO, Scopus, Web of Science) being regarded as the most recent date for searches of Articles 30 November 2011. The search strategy will use three groups of descriptors: 1) related to the outcome, 2) related to age, 3) related to the study design, and the combination of these groups of descriptors will be used Boolean operators. Inclusion criteria are: 1) articles published in Portuguese, English and Spanish, 2) original studies, 3) composite sample of adolescents (10-18 years old), 4) cross-sectional design, 5) original studies showed that the prevalence ECP for both sexes, and 6) the diagnosis of PAE should have followed international guidelines. Potentially relevant articles will be selected through the following sequence: (i) selection of titles (ii) selection of summaries, and (iii) reading the article in its entirety to determine if it fulfills the criteria for inclusion. The "checklist" STROBE, adapted to cross-sectional studies, will be used to evaluate the articles . The prevalence of the outcome and their respective confidence intervals of 95% will be extracted and also analyzed the factors associated with PAE. (AU)
