Apical adaptation of root end filling materials: stereomicroscopy analysis

Abstract

The aim of the study is to evaluate the apical adaptation of root-end filling materials. Fifty-four extracted maxillary canines will be prepared using the crown-down pressureless technique until the 45 K file. The teeth will be obturated using the lateral compaction technique. After 24 hours, horizontal cross-sections will be made at 2 mm level from the apex. Cavities will be prepared in the apical openings of the resected roots using high-speed burs to a depth of 3 mm. Teeth will be distributed into five groups (n=10) according to the cement used: I - White MTA, II - Sealer 26, III - MBPc, IV - White Portland cement with 20% zirconium oxide, and V - White Portland cement with 20% calcium tungstate. The teeth will be scanned using a microCT (Skyscan 1076) before and after obturations. In addition, the teeth will be submitted to fluid infiltration analysis at 7 and 15 days after obturations. MicroCT images will be analyzed and the volume of the obturations after periods of infiltration test will be compared. The results will be submitted to a preliminary test of D'Agostino and Pearson to verify the presence or absence of normal distribution (p<0.05).(AU)
