Abstract

Free radicals are atoms or molecules that contain an unpaired electron in the last electronic layer, a fact that makes them unstable and highly reactive. The overproduction of these molecules causes oxidative stress, being extremely harmful to essential biological molecules, which can cause many different diseases, including various forms of cancer. Community leaders of Assis / SP have reported the use of jatoba species for the treatment and prevention of skin cancer and prevent premature aging, possibly due to its antioxidant action. Therefore, this project aims the evaluation of the antioxidant potential by sequestering free radicals through the test of DPPH, ORAC and Effect of Iron Chelation; cytotoxicity in cultured melanoma murine cells (B16F10-Nex2) and sun protection factor through in vitro by the spectrophotometric method. In addition, this project aims to quantify the total phenolics and flavonoids, also to conducting the bioassay-guided fractionation and characterization of phytochemical extracts of Hymenaea courbaril and Hymeneae stigonocarpa. The expected results may contribute to increase knowledge about the species known as Jatoba (H. courbaril and H. stigonocarpa), besides elucidating ethnobotanical reports of its uses as an antioxidant, sunscreen, anti-carcinogenic and anti-cancer, thus providing a possible identification of new pharmacological compounds capable of employment and /or nutrition.
