Abstract

This research intends to analyze some Brazilian literary representations about the Paraguayan War (1864-1870), investigating the formal solutions used by Brazilian authors in their attempts to deal with historical matters. Thus, we could contribute to other studies of Literary Historiography, as well as to a better understanding of the consequences of this war on Brazilian culture. To this end, we will use examples of the epic literature about the conflict, the satirical poetry published by the illustrated press of this period and some of the work of Machado de Assis and Alfredo d'Escragnolle Taunay.
