Abstract

Cancer is the second cause of death in developed and developing countries. The progressive increasing of case number makes clear the need of continuous development of new chemotherapeutic. About 60% of anticancer drugs are derived from natural products, demonstrating the great potential of these products in research and development of new anticancer drugs. Thus, based on a project BIOPROSPECTA - FAPESP which aimed the evaluation of antiproliferative activity of medicinal plants used by population of a protected area of Serra da Mantiqueira Paulista, a master's degrees project was developed in order to evaluate two species of Boehmeria genus. Between these two species, the ethanolic extract of B. caudata showed the best antiproliferative activity profile for most human tumor lines studied, with cytotoxic effects at concentrations in the order of 0.25 µg/mL. Moreover, from this extract, a mixture of alkaloids was isolated which presented a very good antiproliferative profile in vitro. Based on these results, this project aims to continuing B. caudata antiproliferative evaluation by isolation of active compounds, evaluation of its anticancer activity in vivo and determination of their possible mechanism of action.
