Relation between the buccal orthodontics movement of the lower incisor and characteristics of the buccal and lingual alveolar bone: evaluation by cone-beam computer tomography.

Abstract

Introduction: There is an association among the buccal dental movement and the development of bone dehiscence and gingival recession.Objective: The main objective of this project will be to evaluate the thickness and the level of the lingual and buccal bone plates, in the inferior incisor region, in patients whose corrective orthodontics treatment stimulated a meaningful buccal movement of inferior incisor, comparing to the patients in which orthodontics treatment preserved the initial slope of the inferior incisor or moved them to the lingual. Material and Methods: Computer tomography cone beam (i-Cat, Hartsfield, PA, EUA) will be obtained after an orthodontics treatment in 30 patients, initially with Class I or II malocclusion, treated without tooth extraction in the lower arch which showed protrusion of the inferior incisor, major or equal 5mm during the treatment (Group I); and in a group of 30 patients with malocclusion of Class I and II whose corrective orthodontics treatment did not alter the initial position of the inferior incisor or moved them to the lingual (Group II - Control). The patients of group II will be matched by age, sex, facial pattern and sagittal inter-arch relation with the patients in group I. In the computer tomography images, will be measured the thickness and the level of vestibular and lingual bone plates, as well as the presence or absence of dehiscence and bone fenestrations by the digital method using the NemoScan software (Nemotec, Madrid, Spain). The intergroup comparison will be performed by the independent t test and the test of the chi-square, adopting the significance level of 5%.
