Abstract

Several studies have demonstrated the potential use of filamentous fungi isolated from marine macro-organisms in the degradation of environmental pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and treatment of industrial effluents. However, studies related to PAHs degradation and ligninolytic enzymes production by fungi derived from marine environment are still scarce. Since these micro-organisms are adapted to the marine ecosystem, they can offer biological advantages for application in saline environments. This project is associated with the Project CTPETRO CNPq 558029/2009-4 entitled "Biotechnological potential of fungi derived from marine sponges in the bioremediation of environmental pollutants" under way in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Biosciences Institute of UNESP/Rio Claro (coordinator: Prof. Dr. Lara D. Sette) and has as main objective to assess the biotechnological potential of fungi derived from marine sponges and degradation/decolouration of environmental pollutants. To this end, filamentous fungi previously isolated from marine samples kept in the work/research collection of the Division of Microbial Resources (CPQBA/UNICAMP) will be reactivated, selected and evaluated for their ability to decolorate synthetic dyes, to produce ligninolytic enzymes (MnP, LiP and laccase) and to degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
