Abstract

The high diversity of Satyrinae, with approximately 2500 species, could be responsible to the uncertainty and taxonomic difficult in the group classification, one of the less known groups of butterflies, especially in the Neotropical region. This difficult could be also due to the sparse phylogenetic and biogeographical knowledge of the group in the region. Among the Satyrinae groups that present trouble could be highlighted the subtribe Euptychiina, a group with several genera yet poorly defined (para- and polyphyletic) and that only now begins to be better understood. Accordingly to the phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data, the genus Yphthimoides appears as monophyletic, although a few of its species have been used in the study. Another genus, Pharneuptychia, based on preliminary phylogenetic analysis appears as non-monophyletic, with several species being closest to species of Moneuptychia and Euptychoides castrensis. Thus, it is imperative that the maximum possible number of species in each genus be used to try and trace the evolutionary and biogeographical history of both genera in the Neotropical region, as well as trying to understand the probable processes that lead to the distributional patterns of these taxa in South America. This scenario reports directly to the two main objectives of this project, as follow: 1) the obtainment of robust phylogenies to the genera Yphthimoides and Pharneuptychia based on molecular data and 2) based on these phylogenies try and trace the biogeographical history of both genera to begin to understand the patterns of distribution of these groups in the different geographical units of the Neotropical region.
