Abstract

The search for porous biomaterials (scaffolds) that can allow and stimulate the formation of new bone tissue has aroused the interest of researches since there are an increasing number of publications in this area. Among the potential biomaterials are the calcium phosphate cements (CPC), which in spite of its high biocompatibility, bioactivity and osteoconductive properties, has their use limited because of their low mechanical strength and difficulty in controlling its porosity and, consequently, its degradation rate. A strategy to increase the mechanical strength is the addition of whiskers or fibers of bioceramics. Once silicon is responsible for the physiological processes that control the growth of bone and cartilage, whiskers of calcium silicate may exhibit the necessary properties for their addition to the CPC. The gelatin, a surfactant protein, may be added to the CPC to help the control of porosity and rate of degradation. Therefore, the main objective of this project is the development of scaffolds based on a new formulation of CPC ±-TCP enhanced with whiskers of calcium silicate (W, wollastonite, CaSiO3) and gelatin. In addition, will be possible set synthesis routes technically and economically viable, in an attempt to produce national technology enabling cost reduction and, consequently, prices of materials used in orthopedics and odontology.
