Abstract

The quality of Brazilian agricultural production is highly affected by the presence of pests in crops, making necessary the use of pesticides from different chemical classes, in order to increase productivity and quality. However, the non judicious use of pesticides, not following Good Agricultural Practices, can have adverse effects on the environment and on human and animal health, requiring greater control over types and quantities of pesticides used in agriculture. In this context, this project aims at the development and the validation of new analytical methods for determination and quantification of multiresidue pesticides on lettuce, a high volume consumable crop. These determinations are important to ensure proper production and ecosystem quality. High-performance liquid chromatography and ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry are modern and sensitive techniques to detect compounds at the trace level and will be used in the development of the methods, which will be optimized and validated to increase the selectivity and reduce the analysis time, allowing rapid detection of large number of pesticides, within the maximum residue limits permitted by the National Health Surveillance Agency. The QuEChERS method will be applied for the extraction of pesticide residues from the lettuce matrix, as well as to remove interfering substances, being a fast, efficient and robust method that will be modified to optimize the sample preparation. This project will lead to methods that could be used by different agencies and by the exportation sector, in order to regulate and monitor the use of pesticides on this type of agricultural product in Brazil.
