Abstract

The enteric nervous system is composed of the myenteric and submucosal plexuses, which control motility, the transport of fluids from the mucosa, and local blood flow. These plexuses are formed by neurons and glial cells. Intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R-i) injury is a common, and devastating problem in hospitalized patients, and is associated with high morbidity and mortality in both surgical and trauma patients. Studies have suggested that the small intestine is one of the organs most susceptible to I/R-i, such as that encountered during hemorrhagic shock or small bowel transplantation (RÜHL, 2005; PAULINO et al., 2011). This work aims contribute in original way using functional assays, combined with the results obtained with immunohistochemistry, to understand the effects of different periods of ischemia with reperfusion on the neuro-glial communication in the enteric nervous system mediated by P2X7 receptors. The results of this collaboration will help clarify the role of these receptors in the regulation of intestinal motility after events of ischemia/reperfusion and whether the ATP through its action on P2X7 receptor, could provide a new therapeutic for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders.
