Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Overweight is an important public health problem in several countries, since it is a risk factor for many health problems. Many aspects are related to this issue, including the number of meals and portion sizes of food, but the contribution of both to this epidemic is not well established yet. These factors could also alter the lipid profile, which, as well as excess adipose tissue, is a cardiometabolic risk factor, however, the evidences are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between food portion and the number of meals with nutritional status and lipid profile of residents of São Paulo. METHODS: The data will be used from the cross-sectional population-based ISA Capital 2008, regarding the sample of residents of São Paulo. Subjects will be classified in two groups: overweight and not overweight. In each group, there will be a subdivision according to the number of meals during a day: 1-2, 3-5, 6 or more meals. Food reported in each 24-hour recall will br grouped according to their nutritional value and eating habits of the population of São Paulo. It will be investigated the association between nutritional status, consumption of food groups and lipid profile.
