Abstract

Recently, we demonstrated that monoalkyl carbonates (MACs) can be formed in aqueous medium from carbon dioxide or bicarbonate and an alcohol. There is an increasing interest in this phenomenon, because of the likely presence and function in biological medium. In this sense, polyols are of particular interest. Thus, the present proposal aims the study of carbonate adducts formed with two prototype polyols: 1,3 butanediol and panthenol. Although both polyols are not involved in significant biological processes, they have hydroxyl groups with distinct characteristics, which can help in the elucidation of carbonate formation process. Capillary electrophoresis with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection will be used as a starting technique, which has been used in the previous studies. Mass spectrometry with electrospray ionization shall also be used in order to help in structural elucidation of the possible isomers.(AU)
