Insulin resistance in HIV-infected patients with lipodystrophy

Abstract

AIDS, or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, is a highly prevalent disease worldwide. The treatment of AIDS patients has been based on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). However, the use of antiretroviral therapy is accompanied by severe side effects, including metabolic changes such as those associated with glucose metabolism and insulin. All these changes are grouped into clinically defined as a syndrome of HIV lipodystrophy syndrome (HIVLS). Objective: to evaluate the presence or absence of insulin resistance in HIV seropositive patients with and without lipodystrophy syndrome. Method: data will be collected at the Special Treatment Unit for Infectious Diseases (UETDI) at the Clinic of Dyslipidemia (ADIS), Hospital das Clinicas, Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto (HC-FMRP). To evaluate biochemical laboratory kits will be used when these data are no longer available in the routine care of these patients. The patients will be divided into three study groups: the control group, with lipodystrophy HIV positive, and the HIV-positive group without lipodystrophy. The data will be organized in the table and figures with statistical analysis to verify the associations and differences. (AU)
