Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer's disease. Symptoms caused by PD such as tremors, muscle rigidity and cognitive deficits may lead to the decline of oral health and impairment of the orofacial function. The objective of this project is to evaluate the oral health and masticatory function of patients with PD considering the presence of occlusal pairs and prostheses. For this purpose, 15 volunteers with PD in the stages I to IV according to Hoehn & Yahr scale (1967) (experimental group) and 15 with no PD (control group) will be selected. The oral health status will be evaluated by clinical examination of the remaining teeth and prostheses, the presence of biofilm on teeth and prostheses, and also by the presence or absence of oral pathologies. For masticatory function assessment, the masticatory performance, jaw tracking and maximum bite force will be evaluated. The results collected will undergo exploratory analysis and will be applied appropriate statistical tests. With this research are expected finding a decline of the oral health according to PD progress, masticatory performance impairment, and changes in the mandibular tracings and in the bite force according to the presence of dental prostheses in the volunteers.
