Abstract

The first autochthonous case of American Visceral Leishmaniasis (AVL) in humans in the city of Birigui occurred in 1999 and the number of occurrences is increasing with time, constituting a serious Public Health problem. Objectives: to describe, in time and space, the occurrence of AVL in Birigui; identify, in space and space-time clusters of cases of AVL and areas of greatest risk for its occurrence. Methods: the study area will be the city of Birigui and the autochthonous cases of human AVL occurring between 1999 and 2012 will be analyzed. Home addresses of the cases will be geocoded, allowing to obtain maps of the first occurrences of AVL and incidence rates of the disease according to census tracts in the city. Scan statistics available in the program SaTScan will be used for identifying clusters of cases of AVL in space and space-time and to identify areas of greatest risk for the occurrence of the disease.(AU)
