One of the major topics in Astronomy is the role of the environment on galactic properties, mainly due to our poor understanding of the physical mechanisms that act on the baryonic gas of galaxies. In this project, we plan to shed light on the subject by studying the core of the galaxy cluster Hydra I, combining deep photometry from VLT/FORS1 with high signal-to-noise multi-slit spectra from VLT/FORS2. For this purpose, we shall map the kinematics of the core producing a densely spaced grid covering the galaxy NGC3311 plus two detected dwarf systems and their surroundings. We also plan to determine the stellar populations of the same region to map the distribution of [alpha]/Fe and metallicity using Lick indexes. These products will be used jointly with published photometric data to the study of the current status of the system and its recent history of interaction with the intra-cluster medium. (AU)
