Abstract

This research proposal aims at the development of methodologies for the study of the biological activity of proteins in solution as a function of pH and temperature of this solution and of the ions existing thereon. The final objective is the design and/or improvement of models for protein downstream processing operations. The main issues to be addressed comprise the relationship between the distribution of protein molecule configurations and the activity curve as a function of pH (which entails the relationship between tertiary structure and activity), the development of equations to study the influence of the presence of ions, and the possible incorporation of terms related to the activation energy of the biological reactions and of the thermal denaturation onto the final equations. This project shall be conducted at the University of California, Berkeley, with the group of Prof. Dr. John Prausnitz. (AU)
