Abstract

In this study, we will discuss theoretical-methodological aspects necessary to extract and analyze general language and specialized collocations from the parallel corpus House M.D.We also aim at the compilation of a glossary of the referred phraseological units, as well as the building of corpus-based activities and their applications in English language classes which will be offered in the Extension Course "Linguística de Corpus e Fraseologia aplicadas à prática pedagógica de Professores de Língua Inglesa da Rede Pública". These activities have the purpose of checking if the glossary really fulfills the needs of our target audience. Besides that, they also have the objective of spreading the knowledge of the use of corpus-based activities in the classroom. This research is justified on the basis that when we carry out a collocational and corpus-based study we start to see the language from a new perspective. Contrary to traditional grammar, usually focused on an intuitive approach to explaining how language structures work, we observe the company kept by the words, that is to say, the lexical combinations and their frequencies and recurrences in the language in use. Moreover, when we emphasize and adopt a perspective that prioritizes natural speech in the study of lexical combinations, especially of collocations, we expect to contribute to a more solid and critical pre and in-service teacher training, so that these professionals may pass on this knowledge as well phraseological competence to their own students. To carry out this study, our research derives its theoretical-methodological framework from Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004; BIBER et al, 1998; FRANKENBERG-GARCIA, 2008; MEYER, 2004; SINCLAIR, 1991; TOGNINI-BONELLI, 2001), Phraseology (COWIE, 1998; HAUSMANN, 1984, 1985; HEID, 1991; HILL, 2000; LEWIS, 2000; NESSELHAUF, 2005; ORENHA-OTTAIANO, 2004, 2009; SINCLAIR, 1991, 1996; TAGNIN, 1999) and from Terminology (BARROS, 2004; CABRÉ, 1995; KRIEGER, 2004). It is worth noting that we have some experience gained from undergraduate research (ROCHA, 2012), undertaken in the Department of Modern Languages, from "Instituto de Biociências, Letras e Ciências Exatas", UNESP. For this investigation, we intend to analyze part of the extraction already started more deeply. Besides that, we have the goal of expanding the number of collocations, so that a higher number of general language and specialized collocations is inserted in the glossary. Furthermore, there are other purposes to be accomplished for this work, according to the detailed item objetivos presented in this project. (AU)
