Abstract

The high cost of lignocellulosic biomass conversion by enzymatic hydrolysis is a recurring problem that limits the production of bioethanol from this renewable and highly energetic source. Among the promising approaches to increase the efficiency of the hydrolysis reaction, may be mentioned the development of individually more efficient and stable enzymes through the use of genetic engineering tools and the development of well balanced artificial cocktails between different classes of enzymes and tailor made for biomass to be hydrolyzed. Thus, this project proposes the development of optimized enzyme cocktails based on the rational mixture of essential and accessory enzymes for the saccharification of pretreated sugar cane bagasse. The optimization of the enzymatic mixture composition will be performed by factorial design tools and response surface methodology. The evaluation of the synergism will be based on the micro enzymatic reactions to be validated in this study for sugar cane bagasse pretreated. It is hoped, with the development of this project, to contribute to the understanding of the enzymatic hydrolysis reaction of pretreated bagasse, to generate a more efficient and tailor made enzyme mixture for this biomass and to collect data for the development of a minimum cocktail for the saccharification of bagasse.
