Abstract

Many of the losses associated with smoking habit can be extended to passive smokers. Studies on passive smoking and its effects on mucociliary transport in human beings are still unclear in related literature. Objectives: To investigate the effect of passive smoking on mucociliary transport and in the autonomic nervous system of passive smokers and to investigate possible correlations between these variables. Methods: The sample comprised of 102 individuals, will be divided into three groups: passive smokers, active smokers and a control group with no history of tobacco smoke exposure. The protocol will be performed in two days. The first day will consist of specific questionnaires to each group and spirometry. In a second step it will be performed the avaliation of the heart rate variability (HRV), measurement of vital signs and carbon monoxide (CO) in expired air. Then it will be evaluate the mucociliary transportability (TMC) of all subjects .Statistical Analysis: Data will be analyzed following Graphpad Prism ® statistics program. Data normality will be assessed by the Shapiro-Wilk test. Data will be expressed as mean ± standard deviation, except for variables with non-normal distribution, which will be described as average. For inter-group analysis unpaired t test or Mann-Whitney test will be used, depending on data normality. For intra-group assessment, analysis of variance for repeated measures ANOVA followed by Tukey test will be used in the three phases. Correlations between HRV data and TTS will be evaluated by using the Pearson or Spearman coefficients, depending on the normal data distribution. The significance level to be utilized will be p <0.05.
