Abstract

Stem cells can be defined by properties such as self-renewal and differentiation into other cell lineages. They can be classified according to their origin in embryonic or non-embryonic and according to their potential for differentiation. The mesenchymal stem cells (MSC's) are noted for having therapeutic potential of regulating inflammation, preventing wounds formation and regenerating tissues. Although the bone marrow is a widely used source of MSC's, other sources are being studied, since the number of marrow stem cells and its differentiation capacity declines with the age as well as their differentiation ability. Regarding to embryonic stem cells, they can follow a disorganized program of differentiation and originate tumors, in addition to ethical issues that are involved with its use. Thus, the cells derived from fetal membranes stand out because they are easily obtained, usually discarded and with a large possibility of storage. Several studies with stem cells collected from the umbilical extravascular matrix are reported. Studies have shown that MSC's regulate the immune response, preventing transplant rejection. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the inflammatory response of the gluteus medius muscle to the inoculation of stem cells from umbilical cord matrix after its cultivation and characterization.
