Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the respiratory effects of continuous rate infusion of different rates of propofol in calves. For such, eight Holstein calves aging between six and 12 months and weighing between 80 and 130 kg will be used. They will be induced to anesthesia with propofol at a dose of 5 mg/kg IV and positioned in right lateral recumbency, where they remained spontaneously breathing ambient air. Immediately thereafter, the anesthesia will be maintained by continuous rate infusion of propofol administered with the aid of an infusion pump in two different rates 0.6 mg/kg/minute, IV (G06) and 0.8 mg/kg/minute, IV, (G06), during 60 minutes. The eight animals will be anesthetized twice, with one-week interval between anesthesia. The measurement of heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and respiratory variables (f, ETCO2, SpO2, FIO2, VT, and MV) and arterial blood gases (PaO2, PaCO2, SaO2, pH and HCO3-) will be evaluated before induction of anesthesia (MB) and 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes after the start of continuous infusion of propofol. The data will be submitted to ANOVA and multiple comparisons of means, Tukey adjusted to the level of significance of 5% and tested normality by the Shapiro-Wilk test.
