Practice of different sport modalities and bone mass gain in adolescents: cohort of 09 months

Abstract

It is well documented that physical exercise, when adequately prescribed, affects positively bone growth. However, it is not clear which sport modality has the higher burden on physical growth among pediatric populations. Objectives: To analyze bone mass gain in pediatric populations according to sport modality, as well as to identify the pattern of the bone mass gain in a cohort of 09 months. Methods: the sample will be composed of 200 adolescents of both sexes (100 in the sports group and 100 in the control group). Adolescents engaged in sport modalities (soccer [goalkeepers will be excluded from the main analysis], swimming and volleyball) and martial arts (karate and judo). Bone mineral density in different body regions will be the main outcomes: (I) total bone mineral density, (II) lower limbs region, (III) upper limbs region, and (IV) at low back region. Bone mineral density will be assessed by the Dual-Energy X-ray absorptiometry. Several independent variables will be inserted at the main analyses as potential confounders. Expected Findings: It is expected to identify several particularities in the bone mass gain, according to engagement in different sport modalities. (AU)
