Abstract

Neurodegenerative diseases constitute a major public health problem. The World Health Organization states that 35.6 million people have suffered from some form of dementia in 2012 and estimates this number could triple by 2,050 if therapeutic agents that provide risk reduction or slowing the progression of the disease have not been studied. Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by changes in both cognitive functions related to learning and memory as by behavioral changes, corresponds to 70% of dementia cases. The lack of natural substances employed in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease, as well as the cost and side effects of drugs used currently, has stimulated the search for new therapeutic agents for this disease. In this sense, this study aims to determine the neuroprotective effect of pomegranate peel for Alzheimer's disease and the main compounds responsible for this activity. Then, the project will be conducted to evaluate, as not yet described in the literature, a possible alternative treatment for Alzheimer's disease. (AU)
