Abstract

This project will seek to locate the contemporary critical reception of the novels by Inglês de Sousa. This survey, which allows getting to know the assessment criteria of novels at the time that were written, also offers a more specialized knowledge of dialogues about the novels when they were written, and better able to carry out an evaluative judgment of its quality. Realizes at the critical reception of literature called naturalist in Brazil, the establishment of evaluative criteria anachronistic, from which there is a projection of expectations of present about this past works. This procedure is very common in Stories Literary produced in the twentieth century, and it has no concern to recover the way were read literary texts within their own system of values. To aim at theoretical concern with the recovery of the debates coeval Inglês de Sousa novels, this research hopes to provide a deeper understanding of the author, as well as contribute to studies of the naturalist literature in the country. Moreover, with a view to a better understanding of the impact of the writer's works at the end of the century, it will seek to survey the issues and reissues of his novels, as well as the numbers corresponding to each drawing. Finally, I intend to improve the analysis of critical reception to take into account the possible dialogue between Sousa novels and travel narratives produced by travelers of the Amazon late nineteenth century.
