Abstract

The research herein described is within the scope of Projeto Imagens, Geografias e Educação (CNPq 477376/2011-8), and is centered around the photographic and audio-visual artistic production on the city of São Paulo. We will initially concentrate on two exhibitions, São Paulo Mon Amour and Mapas Invisíveis; on the "Olhar" special supplement of Folha de São Paulo; and on some of the works which are part of Itaú Cultural's photography collection. Our purpose is to propone a careful reflection in which the image of the city takes a central position in the construction of spatiality. Thus, we will meditate on the visuality and the aesthetic education of individuals as a fundamental aspect of comprehending reality. Thinking the image as a medium for the composition of the concept of space means pointing out that space cannot be understood as fixed and unvarying. The photographic images produced by artists such Feco Hamburger or Gal Oppido are not diverse points of view of the city of São Paulo, which if brought together will allow us an all-encompassing image of the city. On the contrary, each audio-video photographic work is an opening into the meaning of space and what constitutes the notion of a city. Each image opens up different possible spaces and cities. This brings us to the reflections of Didi-Huberman on multiple temporality, reflections which we mean to appropriate ourselves of in order to think of a multiple spatiality. This also means demonstrating that the visible is subject to being thought of, and that art may propound not only different ways of seeing the world, but also of seeing through it. Therefore, in the tradition of Deleuze, smaller discourses are to be found inside the greater language which determines the standard interpretation of reality. Following up on this notion by Deleuze, we come to the concept of smaller spaces, as expounded by Doreen Massey; and smaller geographies, as found in Wenceslao Machado Oliveira Jr; as well as a smaller aesthetic education, as in the work of Milton Almeida and Silvio Gallo.
