Abstract

Recently, with the advancement and cheapening of molecular techniques, several morphological characters systems have been widely neglected in anuran systematics. Despite the value of larval characters have been largely demonstrated, they head the list of the underutilized morphological systems. The superfamily Dendrobatoidea is an exponent of such problem. Despite the hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships within Dendrobatoidea be quite stable and robust, information about the larval morphology evolution is scarce. The major aim of this study is to describe and access the evolution of several morphological systems derived from tadpoles. It is estimated the building of a matrix composed by 130 terminals and about 150-200 characters. Such data set will be evaluated under three different approaches: 1) by mapping the transformational series on existing topologies; 2) by using these characters to reconstruct the phylogeny of Dendrobatoidea in a parsimony analysis; and 3) add all phenotypic, karyological, behavioral and molecular data available and perform a total evidence analysis. It is expected to contribute to the taxonomy, identification and to the understanding of the evolution of the Dendrobatoidea tadpoles. (AU)
