Abstract

To help the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD), there are non-pharmacological alternatives, such as physical exercise. Possible effects of physical exercise on some biochemical pathways, such as the insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), have been associated with improvements related brain, neurogenesis and clearance of the protein beta-amyloid. Therefore, studies that investigate pathways responsive to the effects of exercise on the disease are needed to elucidate the biochemical paths can be modulate the AD's pathophysiology. Thus, the objective of this study is to analyze and relate the cognitive functions and plasma levels of IGF-1 after 12 weeks of a program of aerobic training on a treadmill in the elderly with DA. The study will be divided into two stages: a) cross-sectional design - will participate 80 elderly, being 40 elderly with AD and 40 healthy elderly; (b) longitudinal design - the elderly with AD will be invited to participate in an intervention protocol, divided into a control group (CG, n= 15) and group training (GT - n= 15). The elderly will be subjected to a battery of cognitive and blood evaluations and an incremental test on a treadmill. The intervention program will be constitute an aerobic training was performed on a treadmill, with a frequency of 3 times per week, in sessions of 25 to 40 minutes, for a period of 12 weeks. The training will be adapted to physical fitness, as well as the clinical conditions of the elderly with AD. For data analysis, will be checked the distribution of data by Shapiro Wilk's test. In the case of normal distribution, will be used the Student's t-test and ANOVA Two-Way and, in case of non-normal distribution, will be used the Mann Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests. Will be admitted a 5% significance level for all analyzes. (AU)
