Abstract

The inference of phylogenetic relationships among species is the core of comparative biology, since it allows to propose testable hypotheses about morphological and molecular evolution and to infer evolutionary and ecological processes related with species diversification. Despite the family Araneidae being one of the most abundant and diverse spiders groups, especially in the Neotropics, the phylogenetic studies within the family are still very scarce. The genus Wagneriana Cambridge, 1904, has 43 species distributed predominantly in the Neotropics, being the Amazon and Atlantic Forest the richest areas. Although exists a recent taxonomic revision of the genus, the monophyly of Wagneriana and the phylogenetic relationships among its species have not been studied. This project aims to assess the phylogenetic position of Wagneriana within Araneidae and to conduct a cladistic analysis among species based on morphological and molecular data. The preferred phylogenetic hypothesis will enable the analysis of the evolution of morphological characters within the genus and will contribute to the understanding of evolutionary processes related with the diversification of the group in the Neotropics.
