Abstract

Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most frequent malignant lesions, representing approximately 90% of cases. Many of these tumors are preceded by potentially malignant disorders such as epithelial dysplasia and proliferative verrucous leukoplakia. The immune system plays an important role in defending the body against tumor cells by recognizing and destroying malignant precursors cells. Dendritic cells are antigen presenting cells derived from bone marrow, responsible for recognize malignant cells and initiate the immune response through the activation of T cells. In the skin and mucosal tissue these cells are called Langerhans cells. In the present study the objective is to characterize the immunoprofile of CD1a, CD83, CD4 and CD8 and the protein expression of langerin/CD207 in potentially malignant disorders and oral squamous cell carcinoma, aiming a improvements in the diagnosis and prognosis of this lesions. This study will include the following groups: Mild/Moderate Epithelial Dysplasia (n = 50), Severe Dysplasia (n = 50), Proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia (n = 15) and Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (n = 50).
