Time for reduction on shedding of eggs of gastrointestinal nematodes by equines after treatment with different anthelmintics

Abstract

Among several factors that should be considered in the category of equine health, parasitism is a major concern due to the damage caused by the consequent gastrointestinal parasites. The control of this disease is made mainly by compounds anthelmintics, due to its practicality and safety, but some antiparasitic present themselves inefficient. Face of this framework, we intend to evaluate the time required for the reduction of EPG values to identify the differences between times to the beginning of action of the product, the work will be carried out from October 2013 to July 2014, using 50 horses, which will be divided into 5 equal groups based on the number of OPG. After the formation of lots of animals, anthelmintics will be administered and thereafter counts are performed OPG 4, 8, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 48 hours after application. After this period the samples will be taken every 24 hours for 12 days and subsequently on alternate days (48 hours apart) for another 14 days until the end of the experiment (28 days). The anthelmintics tested are: fenbendazole (Panacur), ivermectin (Eqvalan Folder), moxidectin (Equest) and piperazine (Proverme). Will be performed qualitative fecal techniques (Willis and faecal cultures) and quantitative (EPG). The percentage reduction of the number of eggs per gram of feces (R-EPG) is obtained by comparing the EPG after treatment with the control group, using the arithmetic means of EPG counts after treatment, using the program 'Reso 'FECRT Analysis Program, version 2.0 (WURSTHORN & Martin, 1989).
