Abstract

The goal in a six-month internship at the University of Illinois at Urban- Champaign will be investigate different materials and architectures of flexible, self-supporting sensors in the analysis of biofluids (in particular sweat). Various elastomeric substrates will be studied in order to carry out non-invasive analysis, mounted to the skin, without the need of handling complex microfluidics. Measurements of gain of mass and volume for the supporting substrate will be realized in the presence of sweat samples in conjunction with measurements of the changes in frequency with pH and time for systems built specifically for these measurements. The main method of analysis will be colorimetric one from the use of pH indicators aiming at detecting specific components of sweat (such as sodium ions). Different sensors will be fabricated and compared in order to obtain more efficient epidermal systems for monitoring body fluids. (AU)
