Abstract

This is a proposal for Research Internship Abroad (BEPE-DR) at The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (GC-CUNY) under the supervision of Professor Dr. Linnea Ehri. This internship is part of a larger PhD research project to be conducted by Renan Almeida Sargiani (FAPESP case no. 2013/12602-5). The purpose is to examine the benefit of two types of collective training in phonemic awareness on the early learning of reading and spelling skills. The participants will be Brazilian Portuguese speaking children between the ages of 3 and 5 years. Professor Linnea Ehri is one of the world's leading researchers and critics of the area of cognitive psychology of reading. She has authored extensive publications on the topic addressed in the PhD research project. The internship abroad is important for allowing the PhD student access to specialized literature and mentoring on early reading and spelling development, phonemic awareness instruction, and more specifically on the phase theory of reading development. Phase theory was proposed by Professor Ehri. It is internationally recognized and has been widely investigated except in Brazil where few studies have been conducted. The work plan of the internship extends from 1st August 2014 to July 31st 2015 (12 months). The scheduled activities include: orientation meetings, analysis of data from a pilot study, training in research methods and data analysis, and participation in classes and courses offered at GC-CUNY. Completion of this internship will result in three concrete products: 1) analysis of pilot study data, 2) publication of a scientific article and 3) presentation of a study at an international congress.
