Abstract

Some cognitive skills, such as phonological awareness and rapid automatic naming are predictors of proficient reading skills. Phonological awareness is a predictor of reading accuracy, whereas rapid automatic naming is related to speed and fluency of reading. The predictive effect of these abilities are dependent on the orthographic regularity of the language, being the rapid automatic naming would be less restricted to this aspect. Rapid automatic naming is a complex cognitive process and requires skills such as attention, perceptual processes, lexical memory and articulation. Thus, there are evidences that rapid automatic naming can be assessed as a reading development predictive skill or as a diagnostic instrument of learning disabilities. This study aim to find validity evidences of a Brazilian version of rapid automatic naming test and verify its predictive effect on reading skills in children evaluated in two different moments. Will participate children already evaluated in a previous study as well as other children in public schools. Others cognitive skills will be tested: reading, writing, phonological awareness, articulatory precision, attention and intelligence. In order to check validity evidence of the instrument, will be conducted analyzes of variance with age, gender and type of school as independent variables. In addition, correlations between tests and linear regression analyzes will be conducted to verify the predictive value of the rapid automatic naming on reading ability. (AU)
