Abstract

Graphene has attracted immense interest to obtaining electrodes due to interesting characteristics such as high conductivity, chemical stability and low cost. However, graphene is considered a low selectivity material when it is used as electrode. One approach to solve this limitation is modifying of graphene's surface with compounds able to create the appropriate selectivity. The research proposal is to study the electrochemical behavior of modified electrode formed by graphene, gold nanoparticles (AuNp) and iron complex. This hybrid system will be assembled through adsorption a cationic compound on the surface of the graphene. An electrostatic interaction will be produced between the modified graphene and the gold nanoparticle. Thereafter, AuNP can be modified by thiol group from the ligand coordinated to iron complex. We intend to use the iron complex which have been studied on the initial project, [Fe(CN)5ptt]3- (ptt= 4-pyridyl-triazole-3-thiol or 5-(4-pyridyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol). So, we will study the characteristics of this hybrid system and we are planning to test the modified electrodes in electroanalytical experiments. Modified electrode can produce interesting behavior because graphene has a high electron mobility, AuNP can promote an enhancement of electron transfer from interface to electrode and iron complex can produce the selective proprieties to electrode. The project will be executed in cooperation with Prof. Banks at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. His research group has a broad knowledge and experience in chemistry of graphene and electrochemistry, what will support us in the presented proposal. (AU)
