Abstract

Cordia verbenacea DC. belongs to the Boraginaceae family, which contains approximately 100 genera with over 2000 species distributed across the planet. The species occurs along the Brazilian coast (including Atlantic Forest), having many common names like "erva-baleeira". C. verbenacea is widely used to treat various topical inflammatory processes. It was used by Aché® laboratories for the development of the anti-inflammatory herbal medicine Acheflan®. Despite the importance of the species, there is little information about their non volatile secondary metabolites. Considering the relevance of metabolic dynamic studies for medicinal plants we propose to conduct a study on the metabolic dynamic of the species focused on seasonal, circadian and intra-specific variations. Analytical chromatographic techniques will be used in order to obtain chemical profiles, to identify and quantify secondary metabolites in the species. These chemical profiles will be compared and the information obtained will be relevant to determining best harvesting period and growing conditions, as well as expand the knowledge about the chemistry of the species.
