Abstract

There is evidence of the effects of hypoxia during different phases of incubation on the development of organs and energetic metabolism of chicken hatchlings. However, no study investigated the effect of hypoxia during late phase of incubation in the lung morphology of chicks. Thus, we will use stereology technique to verify the effect of hypoxia (15%O2) on lung structure of hatchlings and 10 days old chicks. To this end, fertile eggs (Cobb 500 strain) will be incubated in normoxia during entire incubation (Nx) or in hypoxia in the last week of incubation.(HxL). Hatchlings and 10 days old chicks will be euthanized, lungs fixed and lung volume determined using Cavalieri technique. Cubes of 2/2mm in resin will be cut for light and transmission electron microscopy (sequential cuts in crescent angles). Following images it will be possible to determine volume of structures and quantify barrier and surface for gas exchanges.
