Abstract

The habitat loss can exert great ecological impact on animal populations. One of the most common causes for the decrease of habitat and ambiental alteration is the growing urbanization. the anthropogenic pressure can also exert great influence in the population dynamics. The São Paulo municipality fits in this scene, because is the greater in the country and have several forest fragments in its interior. The pitviper Bothrops jararaca is on of the most common species in the municipality and can be found across its territory. The aim of the present research is to compare ecological characters in two populations of B. jararaca evaluating the fragmentation effects caused by urban growth. The populations will be compared in relation to abundance and body size of the individuals. We going to evaluate the food availability and the predators pressure on the locals of each population lives. The study will take place in two municipal parks of São Paulo, one of them composed by continuous forest area and other a isolated forest remnant surrounded by the city. For snake data collection, active searches (Time Constrained Search), traps (pitfalls and Sherman) and also artificial shelters will be adopted. Specimens donated to the Instituto Butantan, from one of the study locals will be used too. Traps will provide information about prey availability and predation will be evaluated with the aid of clay models. The field work will last twelve months, with four days visits on each park. (AU)
