Abstract

Studies have shown that the quality of the relationship between therapists and patients can significantly affect treatment outcomes. An important component of this relationship is the empathy. Currently, instruments that evaluate empathy, as the Consultation and Relational Empathy Scale (CARE) have been used in medical environments. So, the aim of this study is to translate, cross-cultural adapt and test the measurement properties in patients with nonspecific chronic low back pain of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the CARE. The study will be divided into two stages: 1) translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the questionnaire (n = 30 patients); and 2) evaluation of measurement properties (n = 100 patients). To test the measurement properties, the questionnaire will be answered in two distinct periods. At baseline, all questionnaires (CARE, Pain Numerical Rating scale, WHOQOL-BREF, Working Alliance Inventory (WAI) and the global perceived effect scale) will be applied to test the construct validity, internal consistency and ceiling and floor effects. The second follow up will be carried out 48 hours after baseline, to test the reliability and agreement. As a result, acceptable values of the internal consistency, reproducibility, construct validity and ceiling and floor effects are expected. The availability of a particular measuring instrument for evaluation of empathy in patients with chronic pain may contribute to better monitoring and therapeutic approach for these patients. (AU)
